How Bravo Events helped transform Yeovil’s Christmas Switch-On into an interactive festive experience

When people think about a Christmas lights switch-on, they picture a countdown, a stage, and a moment.

But the Yeovil Town Christmas Lights Switch-On 2024 set out to be something more — a fully immersive, town-centre experience that encouraged people to explore, interact, and stay.

At Bravo Events, our role was to take that vision and make it tangible through technical production — using lighting, sound, and staging not just to support the event, but to shape how people moved through it.

Luke Evans takes to the stage to switch on Yeovil’s Christmas lights, marking the start of the town’s festive celebrations.

Making the Most of a Restricted Space

Due to ongoing building works in the shopping centre, space for the main stage was limited — so the approach needed to be practical and efficient.

We used a 17.5t rigid lorry as the stage, which allowed us to:

  • Maximise available audience space

  • Keep the setup compact within a constrained footprint

  • Deliver a quick, straightforward install so focus could remain on the wider event elements

With a full PA system and stage lighting in place, it provided a simple but effective platform for the live performances and key switch-on moment — without overcomplicating an already busy site.

Extending the Experience Beyond the Stage

What made this event stand out was everything away from the stage.

Working within a Jack and the Beanstalk theme, the event designers wanted the entire shopping centre to feel part of the story — not just the performance area.

That’s where lighting became a storytelling tool.

We introduced gobo projections of giant footprints across the site — subtle but highly effective.

These weren’t just decorative. They:

  • Drew attention to key areas within the market

  • Guided visitors toward interactive posters and clue points

  • Helped create a sense of journey and discovery for families

The lighting became a visual cue — quietly telling people “look here” without the need for signage or instruction.

Supporting the Wider Environment

Alongside the interactive elements, we also enhanced the wider space with architectural uplighting.

This worked in harmony with the shopping centre’s installed Christmas lights, adding:

  • Depth and atmosphere to the environment

  • A consistent festive tone across different areas

  • A more polished, cohesive overall look

It’s often these subtle layers that elevate an event from functional to memorable.

A Town Centre Transformed

Delivered by Dog With A Bone Creative Studio, the event was the most ambitious Yeovil had seen to date.

  • Over 20,000 attendees

  • More than 3x increase on the previous year

  • 13% uplift in town centre footfall

It’s a strong example of how creative placemaking, supported by thoughtful technical delivery, can have a real impact — not just on the event itself, but on the wider community and local economy.

More Than Just Equipment

For us, this project reflects something we’re increasingly passionate about at Bravo Events:

Using technical production to shape experiences — not just deliver them.

Whether it’s:

  • Transforming a theatre into an immersive performance space

  • Guiding audiences through a story using light

  • Or turning a town centre into an interactive festive environment

The goal is always the same:
make people feel part of something, not just present for it.
